4. The 12-Bar Blues Progression
The most common chord sequence in all of blues music.
What is it?
The 12-bar blues is a specific chord progression that repeats every 12 measures (or "bars"). It's the foundation for countless blues songs. It uses the three chords we've already learned (A7, D7, and E7, if we're in the key of A) in a predictable pattern. Learning this pattern is a huge step towards being able to jam and play along with other musicians.
